A grinding downshift to 1st is typical for a 915 with over 100K . The trans is cheaper and easier to fix than broken headstuds. + 1 on look for broken studs. You can sometimes see them broken with a careful look with a flashlight. The exhaust side studs are dilivar and more prone to breakage. The upper studs are steel and seldom break.
