My first thought would be to take a step back and let nature take it's course. I'd want to know what I had before I asked too many people too many questions and opened a Pandora's box that I couldn't shut if I wanted.
The first, and only, thing I'd do at this point is to research the car's ownership history. I'd limit my inquiries to the previous owner and the DMV and approach it from the persepctive that you are simply trying to document the history of the car, which is something that is commonly done in the collector car world. I wouldn't alert the previous owner to the notion that there is anything wrong, as he may be unaware of any problems.
