The carbs on my bike have been trouble free and I rode some newer CBR's before I bought the VFR that were FI. The throttle response was much less manageable on those bikes. Felt in some ways like riding my 2 stroke CR250 dirt bike. I would not be scared of carbs if they've been well maintained.
