I have cut out the bell housing on the '88 and did not on the '87. The '88 has the original starter and the '87 has a Bosch "remanufactured" starter. I have experienced no hard starting issues on either car.

Techno Duck is correct when he advises the use of the sleeve with the newer high torque starters or if the owner has hard starting issues.
