Check out small catamarans, very shallow draft plus stability. Can handle rough water if it has wing clearance. More interior area for a given size. easier to drive = smaller engine, less fuel consumption.
I have a 12' Livingston that gets around well with 15 hp, planes with four plus surfboards on-board. I keep mine very simple cause it serves as tender for my tri, and is hoisted aboard and flipped over for storage in the tramp area. Can be set up with Bimini and forward steering for more comfort. 16' to 18' makes for a nice size boat.
