I'm sure most dogs will give early warning by barking.

A number of years ago, someone I know very well had his house burglarized. His pit bull was killed and gun safe penetrated and cleaned-out. He lost quite a collection including pre-ban black rifle stuff. Nothing much else was taken, so obviously they knew what was in the house and how to get at it.

We had a very intimidating and protective dog (115lb male Akita) for a number of years. He scared the bajeezus out of strangers as well as many family and friends. Problem was, I trusted him with my life but was always a bit nervous about my own kids and in particular, neighborhood kids who might get into the backyard when I wasn't around. That would have been very, very bad. He died of natural causes and now we have an Aussie that barks when so motivated but I doubt he would scare anything bigger than a rabbit away.
