How to ship oversized package cost effectively?

I sold my front Pitbull stand for my previous bike and shipping was around $20 through USPS. I went to Home Depot and got two of their 24x18x18 boxes and made a custom box out of them. I guess it turned into 28x18x18 and weighed around 10 lbs. Not too difficult.

Trying to ship the rear stand has been a nightmare. UPS wanted $57 to box it up and ship it. So I went back to Home Depot, bought those two boxes again and boxed it up myself. I went to the Post Office yesterday and they said $15 postage. But then they measured it and said there was an additional oversize parcel charge of $52!!!!!! So $67 total. This is insane. Worse yet, my wife was using her car, so I had to buy the boxes and carry it all in my 993, then put the boxes together in the Post Office parking lot. When I learned their price, I had to unpack it and discard the boxes in order to carry the stand back home in my car.

How do I ship this thing? It weighs 10.8 lbs. Can't I just wrap it in plastic and drop it off somewhere?

Does this look like an oversized item?
