You can build a system from Newegg for cheap these days. I'm running an AMD Phenom II X6 1090, 6 core 3.2 GHZ, about equal to the upper middle range i7 processors for 1/2 the price. And they are on sale right now!

Without a Monitor, you can build a cranking system (high end Video card, RAID 1TB, 4-8GB RAM, etc) for under $1K.
