Craig, my company does home theater installs, from small jobs to 10-20 seat dedicated home cinema. At 12.5', or in my language, roughly 3 meters, you would be best with a 42". This will probably give you a cost saving as well. Alternately you can pay more for a better tv.
The best thing to do is go to a store and ask to see both the 50" and 42" at 12.5'. Remembering to make sure you are not standing. Squat down if you have to and get your eye level around the middle of the screen.
