puzzling indeed. i would verify all the teeth on the ring gear are there, remove the starter and have someone crank the engine over by hand and look for any missing. if all teeth are present next thing i would perform would be a compression test. compression checks out starter draw test, and the list goes on. teeth and compression are the major contributors to your condition though
