At first, when I bought my TV, I wanted a 50", but after researching viewing distance stuff and going to the store to compare, I decided on a 46". My primary viewing distance is 12' too. At first, I thought it was too big, but after a day or two, that thought went away.
What dewolf says is right. Go to the store and compare. Don't listen to the sales person either. Make your own decision. Then buy online to save on sales tax. Some places will offer free shipping. Don't get fooled into buying extended warranty either.
Personally, I like Sony, but I am brand loyal.
