I agree. Have to start young.
My daughter (HS freshman) is like that. She tracks her grades online, is trying for straight A's, currently "A" in everything except her "B" in Chinese. She's also trying to keep up her record of perfect scores in every math test this year.
My son (5th grade), well, we're still working on spelling, conjugation/grammar, and penmanship. He's brilliant in what he's interested in, indifferent on the rest. He came to me last week for a explanation of why moving wires through magnetic fields produce electric currents. A lot of his energy goes into Lego creations, learning about the solar system and science tidbits, and physical stuff (fencing, dance, Ripstick).
