I typically disassemble my guns and polish the internals with 400-600 grit wet and dry, using a light gun oil. I pretty thoroughly deburr everything and break all the sharp edges that shouldn't be sharp. That does wonders for the newer guns. On the older ones, they used to do that for you. There is nothing better than a slick lever gun that practically works itself. There is nothing worse than one that sticks, clunks, grinds, and bruises the backs of your fingers. Newer Marlins are way better than most, but still not as good as the older, hand-fit rifles.
I would be more afraid of a guy with a well broken in lever gun handed down through dad and grandpa than I would be of some clown with a decked out "tactical" AR15/AK47/ whateverthefukk. A man in a pair of jeans and an olf flannel shirt who knows his lever gun will make short work of the fool in his tactical costume with all the latest must-have gee-gaws hanging off of his rifle. The guy in the videos demonstrates that quite nicely.
