Usually when the big red light lights up another light in the cluster lights up so you can read what the problem is. Turn the key to the on position,(when everything is lit before you start it) make sure all the light are lit, compare what should be there to the owners manual. If one is out that may be the warning that is coming up and the bulb is just out. On my car, if you can't "reset" the red light it's a Major malfunction (oil level, ect) Doesn't mean you have one it just means it thinks you do. The fact that it did it when you hit the cruise is odd and it may be creating the issue. Is the cruise off?
