I had heard about it from a friend who owned a 1986 model. He said it was a pretty common thing, and that the dealers regarded them as "replace only - not repairable".
I did a quick Google to see what turned up, and Corvette Magazine seems to indicate the failure rates were high between 1984 and 1989.
