A flashing "!" means something of priority is wrong or atleast the control module thinks something serious is wrong. Look in your owners manual and check that all the warning lights are working, generally a flashing "!" means problems with the brake circuit, brake fluid level, engine oil pressure, engine oil level, or engine temp. A solid "!" is less critical and usually means low fuel, anti lock brake, parking brake, coolant level, washer fluid level.... you get the jist.
I'd figure it out before driving any distance just to make sure it isn't a critical system that coincidentally failed with your attempt to use cruise cont.
