I seem to find 2 to 3 wallets a year just lying on the floor or in the street and always pick them up and check the driver's license to see if they live close-by. If they do, I'll swing by and drop it in their mailbox, if not, I'll just dump it at the nearest PO Box.
After doing this forever, I had the kind gesture reciprocated.
I was eating at a local deli facing the window over-looking my car parked on the street when a parking enforcement officer pulled up behind my car and got out. I ran outside thinking the meter had JUST run out and as I made my way over, saw that it had just happened and the 3-minute grace period that the meter gives had not ended yet. I turned to the parking enforcement and said "grace period" with a smile and went to grab some change out of the car. He hemmed and hawed, but I pleaded with him and eventually he told me to have a nice day and drove off.
I went home and was watching TV when 2 hours later the doorbell rang. I opened it and there was an older couple standing there and the husband was holding my wallet. I just stood there with a dumbfounded look on my face as he explained what had happened.
Apparently, in my haste to grab some change out of the car, the wallet had fallen out of my pocket and onto the sidewalk next to the deli where there is a Starbucks. The husband said he was sitting on the patio having a smoke while his wife was ordering and getting their coffees when he noticed my wallet on the sidewalk. He walked over, picked it up and saw that I lived in the same city. He punched my address into the navigation on his cell phone and decided to drop my wallet off, as it was on their way home.
I thanked them graciously and invited them inside for a drink and some food, but they refused and left.
There are still good people left in this world.
