Yesterday, the indicators in my 71 S began by flashing individually but then after a few flashes it would dim and both indicators would flash, like as you mention the hazards would do. This normally means that one of the bulbs has gone. It my case all the bulbs worked correctly so I cleaned the connections on the indicator relay and that fixed the problem.
Sometimes electrical problems can be the worst.
