Sounds like you are already rationalizing!
To me, it wouldn't matter how "gentle" the hit/damage was. If it was re-painted (for any reason) it would be a no-go. Too many unmolested examples out there to settle for that. If it
wasn't re-painted (hard to fathom), it is a rare factory defect, and would carry the same stigma (de-valuation). I would head the advise in this thread.
