The dealers asking exorbitant amounts usually have outstanding cars and they also offer financing and in some cases, warranties.
Their buyers are not looking at the fact that (for instance) a 993 can be bought for the dealer's asking price of a 3.2 Carrera. These buyers may be wanting the car they loved at some prior point in time, and looking for the "reassurance" of buying from a company that'll be there in future. They also often value their time. Unfortunately, a lot of private sellers are just a huge pain in the ass to deal with.
