I don't think you can go too wrong with the 870 or the Mossberg 12ga pumps. I bought a folding stock/pistol grip and an 18" barrel for my Mossberg 500 and mounted a light on it. It sits beside my bed and has always gone bang in the middle of the night when the dog alerts us to a cat food stealing varmint. I am sure I have smoked at least 50 varmints over the years with it with no failures of any kind. It sits out collecting dust and never gets cleaned. I am confident an 870 will be just as useful/reliable of a tool.
20" would be better if you ever decide you want to try 3 gun competition shooting.
