I'm going with those who have said it's mostly genetics. When I was young with no body fat to speak of, you could see ghosts of (sort of) squares there but never like you see in pictures. I also agree with those saying exercises that promote whole body strength and cardio health are the way to go. One of the best calorie burning exercises I've found is hiking uphill with weight on my back. I suppose you could get that with an inclined treadmill.
