msd ignition recommendations

Hello,
I am stumped on what ignition control unit I should run on my car. The car is a 1980 911 sc which is now a spec 911 car which says the following about ignition: "Ignition system is free as long as it is single plug per cylinder." I am deciding between the msd programmable 6al-2 ignition control or the 6al-2 digital ignition control. Basically, the programmable one or the non-programmable one. I am leaning towards the programmable unit. I have not programmed ignition control units before but I am sure I will be able to figure it out fairly easily. I believe they both have adjustable rev limiters. One question I have is does an 80 911sc have a "Hall Effect" type distributor and are both these different ignition units compatible with a Hall Effect distributor (which I don't know too much about). I would like to learn the technique of programming ignition control units and I think now would be a good time to start. Let me know if you think there is a better programmable unit out there or if programming these is near impossible.
Thanks
scott
