yes whenever R2D2ESQ gets involved its a train wreck.............period.

as far as 7mm08.....................its yer pesos. not mine. we shoot alot. shooting IS EXPENSIVE!

and ya just cant beat .308/.30.06 period. cheap azz surplus ammo for plinking practicing.

and practice is what its all about. because the ONLY sit on yer azz shot yer ever gonna make is if there over 500yds plus away canyon to canyon, and you have time to set up a shot. and then you better be DAMN GOOD or yer gonna miss or have a wounded animal which totally SUCKS!

now with a snap shot ..............well are the kritters gonna be tied to a tree? R2D2ESQ's DAKTARI game preserve where they are fed twice daily at the watering hole?.....................i doubt it.

so what do you do? hmmmmm. the range aint gonna help with a SNAP SHOT on a moving animal unless they have running uppy downey targets. sooooo...........us uneducated airy zoney hillbillys do what we DO BEST! shoot moving targets! DUH!

rock squirrels, gophers, bunnies, dove ,quail,pigeons(r2d2esq's fave), and ..................PRAIRE DAWGS(dogs). or anything else that MOVES and is LEGAL.

because i can promise you, unless yer in r2d2's daktari fantasy land and are suffering from acute oxygen starvation of the brain...............there aint gonna be any kritters tied to trees, and the very second they get a WHIFF of you they will be in the NEXT COUNTY!

its somethang to do with their acute OLFACTORY senses. and then yer back at a long range shot which a 7mm08 aint gonna be worth a freeking daktari scarf!

sooo if its brushy country.............30.30 and yer limit is 200yds. a 45/70........w/optics and a hell of alot of practice(remember rainbow trajectory) maybe 400yds. .30.30 isnt exactly cheap. everyone wants black evil assault sniper rifles not lever actions anymore.

after that...........FACE IT! .308(w/heavy bullet, .30.06/.300 win/.338 win/.375.

an 8mm mauser is = to a .30.06.

.44 mag pistol w/long barrel 200yds. .44 mag lever rifle........200yds max

.30 carbine on a kritter.........150 maybe 200yds.

the vast majority of my shots over the years have been on moving animals, unless i am glassing and spot them from a distance.

and OPTICS ARE EVERYTHING! hmmmm my list of handheld optics:

1) leupold 1200yd lazer range finder

2) nikon 1000 yd lazer range finder

3) DOKTOR(zeiss) 15x80 binos w/bipod

4) steiner 10x50 binos(range finder)military version

5) steiner 6x30 military w/range finder

6) tasco 10x50 rangefinder compass(marine/boat version)

7) (2) pair bushnell 15x60 spotting scopes

all waterproof and thats KEY!

and the hunt area dictates what optics we use. so yes its overkill, but with (2) kids and myself...............well IF "ITS" THERE WE WILL FIND IT! and KILL IT!

unlike r2d2esq driving around his fantasy daktari game preserve in his lil "outfit" w/genuine authentic "daktari" zebra scarf in his genuine authentic range rover painted w/pink zebra stripes, shooting from the upper platform, all the while sipping lattes and trying not to knock over the expresso maker.

with (2) safes full of spoons................i get to pick and choose everyday what i carry concealed, what i play with at the range, what i play with out in the sticks, and what i HUNT WITH!

snowy rainey muddy...........HK-91 w/5rd mags. (1) in pipe if alone and (5) in mag.

long range canyon to canyon for deer. .308 mcmillian or .338 mcmillian

tight nasty yuckky brush for deer........30/30-.357 mag lever, .44 mag lever

tight nasty yuckky brush for elk or door to door bagdad elk juniper jumping...45/70

long range canyon to canyon elk. .338 mcmillian.

they are all just like a surgical tool kit. built/made for exact hunting conditions.

i dont know JACK POO! all i KNOW is I HAVE ELK /DEER IN MY FREEZER THIS VERY MOMENT and numnutz r2d2esq is eating PIGEONS!
