With petroleum prices forecast to rise sharply over the next 12-24 months and no decline in sight, I'd avoid any large-ish vehicles at all for the time being.
If gas goes to $5 a gallon (it will in the next couple of years most likely), the prices/values of large pick-em-ups and SUVs are going to crater. Nobody will be able to afford to drive them.
Remember, it's not the up-front costs you need to concern yourself with. It's the recurring ones.
