In your initial post, you implied you can select 3rd with the trans stuck in reverse, and the engine stalls. You SHOULDN'T be able to select 3rd or 4th with the trans stuck in reverse, it means your interlock plunger has slipped out of position, and may be why you're having a problem. If so, you'll run the risk of selecting two gears at once someday.
