My cats don't mind being picked up, so it's never a struggle. They wiggle, but by then I'm done. Even when I have to put medicine down their mouths, I just hold 'em like a vet does (scruff of neck works well) and let them know (firmly but gently) I'm not taking any schit. Or you can use leather motorcycle gloves and something with long, impenetrable sleeves, like chainmail.
