The little snake wrapped around a stick thing that is a doctor symbol, cadeucus, or however that is spelled, derives from this. It was always in the zodiac, but was not counted, presumably because then there would be 13, and that is an unlucky number. All the dates have to shift a little if you divide the year by 13 instead of 12.
How much of a dork does it make me that I know crap like this, and I am not even into that zodiac stuff at all.

The zodiac was the circular path of the Sun and planets through the sky. 4 thousand years ago, it went pretty cleanly through the "classic" twelve constellations in roughly equal times of 30 days.
That circular path has moved in the sky (the Earth is wobbling), so it's now in 13 constellations and for unequal periods of time.
There was no hidden MSM conspiracy to prevent ancient doctors from being recognized as important.
