James, so you're the one responsible for that pressed-in bottom bracket. Shame on you...but at least it was Grease-guard as I recall.
I lusted after Merlins back then, but I was riding steel (Landshark, then a sweet Davidson w/75 degree head angle...great crit bike). When I finally could afford Ti, Merlin was in disarray, and I fell for a Moots. And to this day the love continues.
