Check your individual state/country laws but in our state, the insurance is on the car. This is pretty common. Whomever drives the car is insured because the car is insured. There are exclusions for certain drivers. For example, our insurance is not valid if you are a non-family member under age 25.

If the insurance is valid under the circumstances of use, and you have collision damage insurance, then yes, the car would be repaired. If it stolen on a test drive and you have comprehensive (valid under the circumstances) then the car will be paid for. If they kill someone (with your validly insured car) the insurance will pay out.

Then the other guy will go after you for the rest of the dough. Insurance is not a magic bullet or a singing sword. But you are more protected WITH insurance than you are without it.
