what year car do you have?
On 87+ 911s, the top of the shift knob prys off to allow access to the nut which holds the knob on the shaft. On pre-87 cars, the shift know is held on with a 'crush washer'. In order to remove the shift knob, you have to 'carefully' hit it upward with a hammer.
