The M30 was not in the M6's, the M30 is the more mundane more than can be found in the 633 and 635's (and the same motor in my 535is, it is a wonderful big 6, but it is also a bit of a slug).
I believe the motor in the 80s M6 was the S38 B35, and while these motors are fantastic when they are running, they are very expensive to maintain, and a rebuild will cost a good bit more than the whole car is worth, odds are why you see one for sale for $2,500. Given that it was derived from a race motor, they tend to be harsh, and also need to be pushed through the rev band to enjoy the power they can put out.
I won't tell you not to buy it, but it could be a very costly road if you do.
