Vic Elford talks about that in his "Performance Driving" book. Talks about it probably saving his life.
He was in his 911, was purposely in the right lane (never get 'boxed in in a middle lane) and left a car length in front of him. And... keep it in gear with the clutch in, ready to go.
Saw a car approching from the rear at high speed, no way he could stop.
Vic turned right, drove clear off the road into the weeds and watched the car destroy the car that had been in front of him.
When you're stopped, watching the mirror can be critical.
