My best friend in Germany was burned horribly in a grill explosion in a tiny village in Hungary, back when it was still a pretty backward country. I happened to arrive in Germany soon after he was brought to a burn clinic in Munich. Seeing him in that plastic bubble and having to talk to him over a phone was gut wrenching. I stayed for a few weeks and he was then able to come out and walk. The next summer I went back and he was wearing a compression shirt and looked like he had chewed bubble gum stuck all over his upper body and lower arms. He's still horribly scarred, but leads a totally normal life and is engaged. It was a life-changing experience for all who were around him then.
