Son of a....!

While I was working the backing plate off the driver's side cam, the back woodruff key (feather key) somehow got dislodged (which I was unaware of at the time) , and as I used more force to get the backing plate off, I ended up gouging the inside ring of the plate with the dislodged feather key. The only thing that sanding it down with 600 grit would do is get the sharp edges off of the gouge, as it is too deep to buff out. The gouge is about 1-2 mm deep. Is the backing plate salvageable since the little rubber o-ring inside the spacer that goes on after the backing plate is what keeps the oil from leaking out?
