I had a new windshield a few years ago and it cracked on a cold day, when i turned the key to start the car. The glass was only 3 days old.
The crack originated at the vin plate. The installer figured that the edge of the glass was touching the plate or one of the rivets that hold it in place.
Moral of the story....make sure the galss is not resting against the plate or its rivets.
