Two questions for those in the know:
1. Caps are typically hardened. I assume this is mainly for a wear resistant surface? Instead of a heat treat harden could I use DLC?

I'd like to make them to size on the lathe and then coat ($5 each).

2. Can you use a 'punch' of shim stock under the cap to tweak?
