Subaru outback has decent towing capacity (for what you're trying to do anyhow).
They'll do abou 2700# in the 4cyl CVT setup, and more with the 6 cyl.
These are more of a true "wagon" and have significant cargo space in the back. Many current SUV or mini-SUV platforms are disappointing when looking at cargo area behind the seats.
Please, no comments about softball playing women wearing mullets... The car does have some utilitarian value.
