I just picked up a Roku XDS box ($99). Seems to be fine. Reviews cite the greater number of connection options (HDMI, VGA, S-video, component) and 1080p res. that the Apple TV doesn't provide. In addition, there is free content access.
I decided against buying the Apple TV box that basically allows one to see content at $.99/movie or TV show. An iTunes monthly bill could add up quickly. Netflix streaming via a Roku box, Blu-Ray player or computer is about $8/month for unlimited streamed movies (though not many of the latest films as offered by iTunes).
Another option is to (also) connect your computer to the TV and watch Netflix, YouTube, Pelican, email messages and other content. Try Clicker.com for TV shows..... on your TV.
Free music can be accessed any number of ways. I have a player embedded in my Yahoo mailing program called GrooveShark, with their large playlist available (+7M) for selection on my TV and playing through my audio system.

Do a google search to compare Roku, Apple TV, SlingBox, Boxeee, etc.
