I had an E28 535i for a year. It seemed no faster than my Camry V6. Yet needed as much crap fixed on it-probably more-than a neglected 911 (and if I had fixed it I would have had $4k into a $2k car with 210,000 miles.)
Perhaps I 'get it' to some extent with an E30 M3 or Z3M coupe or something that is practical-ish yet very sporty and well-balanced. But a 5-series? A big lunking E39 or E60?! I think I would just steal the E28 or E34 M5 motor to put into an E30 Sedan/M3...or better yet just go onto an S54 or S50B32...and by that time I would have enough invested in the project to just build a hot rod 911...
I do admit they look good. The E34 posted above is a gorgeous, solid machine.
But I don't get the reason for turning big lunks into muscle cars, sports sedans or...anything really, besides big lunks to haul your junk to the mountains.

Big lunk?
The 1985 e28 euro M5s had ~290hp and weighed ~3200 lbs (11 lbs/hp)
The 1985 911 Carrera euro had ~230hp and weighed ~2800 lbs (12 lbs/hp)
Hell, a new base 997 weighs about the same as a e28 M5
