Some of the slower riders had planned to do the whole race on one front tire and Dunlop knew this. The AMA threw a red flag at just under half distance, because Dunlop was wanting the teams to not run the whole race on one front tire, after some of the front tires began overheating and Dunlop feared the worst. Since the red flag was thrown, the running order backed up one lap, at which point DiSalvo was still running. The AMA allows teams to work on their bikes during a red flag period this year. There was enough time to do the engine change, so they did it. All legal, by the rules. DiSalvo got lucky. One more lap and he'd have been toast.
