Or maybe you were YOUNG and inexperienced....?
The first time I drove a '78 911 (1983?), stock (<3000lbs, 180HP..?), the surge of acceleration that came on at about 4,000 RPM amazed me. And being so very well "planted" in the twisties, up to a point, doesn't hurt.
