It's not just ownership, you can't possess a handgun without a permit in NY. That in itself can get you a felony charge. This will likely be criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree and is a Class A misdemeanor charge.
Also, NY limits the magazine to 10 rounds for any mag manufactured after 1994. When the federal ban expired, the NY ban did not. If the mags are not marked with a mfg date, it'll be hard to prove that.
