I have seen diagrams like the one above that are not correct. The picture below is the ONLY way to plumb supply to and from the filter console.
The fuel pump supply goes to the right side of the console as shown. The return from the MFI injection pump goes on the left side. The above fuel tank/pump/ filter diagram shows the opposite, which is wrong.
The filter housing has arrows on the top which helps one understand how the system should be plumbed, but it can be confusing. If you take the filter off and look at the underside of the filter console you can see more how it is engineered.
