Just a couple of points I would like to make...

I found that I would get to about 75% complete and then begin to loose interest.
And then begin another model. So what I did was make a rule that I can not begin another model until the one I was building was 100%.

Also, have a dedicated area in your house that isn't used for anything else if you can.
So you don't have top keep packing things up and shifting them about. That's usually when I would damage something.
