The backside of the knob typically has a hollow shaft pointed inside toward the interior of the seat, where it "fits over" a metal male shaft. The plastic hollow probably is broken with a hairline crack....or worse...and there is a metal "barb" piece that is inserted between the "hollow" of the knob and the male shaft of the seat.....so they stay together better. There is a part number for this sharp barb...and it cost peanuts.
