I've got a Samsung that's a little over a year old. The tray will open right away. You don't have to ower the thing on to open the tray. Hit the open button with the power off and the tray opens. Put a disk in and push the tray shut and the player turns on automatically. Occasionally it will take some time to start a disk. I updated the software in the player, and that helped.
