Same reason we call individually wrapped sterilized self-stick bandages "bandaids." As I understand it, Davenport made a lot of well-known couches, and it became a household word which seems to have survived the company.
Makes me wonder. Will our grandkids be mystified that we say "google" when we mean "look for?"
