So much of it is that we grew up loving Dumbo.
Elephants are without a doubt very intelligent and very long lived.
We can see the long childhood and the society the elephant herds have and identify with them.
It is always interesting killing a rat is seen as a good thing but killing a squirrel is frowned upon because it is cute. The furry tail make all the difference.
When any dangerous animal competes with humans for habitat the animals loose.
