Handbrake does 99% of the dvd's for me, and on the occasional one that has encryption, I'll run it through MacTheRipper first. (Mac OS X based).
Basically, if Handbrake pukes when trying to do the initial analysis, it'll probably require something like MacTheRipper to extract the content before hand.
And if you have VLC installed, Handbrake can use it's libraries to do an even better job at reading DVD's.
